The first Welland Canal was built in 1824 and completed six years later. Its construction is responsible for the existence of the town known as Port Dalhousie. The canal came into being in the early 1800s and was originally located at the western end of Lakeside Park. It followed the northeastern side of Lock Street, turned south near Government Gate Yard and Maple Leaf Rubber Company (Lincoln Fabrics) before joining with Twelve Mile Creek.

A neighborhood in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada is called Port Dalhousie. John Askin and Thomas Mercer established it for the first time in 1828, and it was recognized as a town in 1890. In addition to hosting the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, it is renowned for its seaside charm.
